Part 2 of the Aggression in Dogs Conference Mini Series
We talk to Dr. Amber Batson about her work as a veterinarian and behaviorist. She is speaking on the first day of the aggression n Dogs Conference 2022 on the  topic, “Sometimes, it might be Zebras when you hear Hoofs. Unique Medical Conditions in Aggression Cases”. We discuss this as well as what she is excited to learn at the conference.
Guest: Amber graduated from the Royal Vet College, London in 1999 and went straight in to first opinion vet practice.  She soon realized that many elements of her consultations included behaviour, whether as a symptom of potential disease (my dog’s sleeping more than they used to, my dogs more irritable than they used to be), or a direct request for help in a behaviour problem (my dog wont stop eating the cushions) or because understanding dog behaviour facilitated a better relationship with the dog and their human. In 2007 she set up Understand Animals, UK, a business providing behaviour and welfare education for both animal caregivers and professionals. Today she still works in vet practice seeing medical and behaviour cases,  but also teaches behaviour worldwide and works as a legal expert witness in welfare cases.
Book Recommendation: Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers: An Updated Guide to Stress, Stress Related Diseases, and Coping (2nd Edition) by Robert Sapolsky and The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel van der Kolk M.D.
Host: Marika completed her MA in Anthrozoology at the University of Exeter, UK in 2016 and upon moving back to the Seattle area of Washington state she joined the board of Homeward Pet Adoption Center. She also holds a University degree in Zoology (UW) and a CPDT-KA from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers.
Now, host of The Deal with Animals, she enjoys chatting with people who know a lot more than she does about the various research disciplines of Anthrozoology as well as authors, nonprofits, professionals, and enthusiasts!
Credits: The Deal With Animals is hosted by Marika. Music was composed by Kai Strandskov. Editing for this episode by Marika S. Bell

Humans interact with animals every day of our lives. Even those without pets interact with animals in various ways: diet, wildlife, the clothes they wear. Even most medicines use animals in testing or in the medicine itself. This is a podcast about Anthrozoology: the study of interaction between humans and non-human animals.
