#4: Ending Whale & Dolphin Captivity in Canada

March 2, 2018

Episode 4 of the Paw & Order podcast is all about getting whales and dolphins out of captivity. Hosts Peter Sankoff and Camille Labchuk do a deep dive (pun intended!) into the legal efforts to rescue these smart, sensitive animals from tiny concrete tanks. This has been a major focus for animal advocates in Canada, and real progress has been made.

Peter and Camille fill listeners in on the history of cetacean captivity in Canada, then discuss two recent lawsuits filed by the Vancouver Aquarium. First, they explain a copyright lawsuit designed to silence the film Vancouver Aquarium Uncovered (the Aquarium lost), and second, a lawsuit challenging the Vancouver by-law that banned the Aquarium from keeping whales and dolphins (the Aquarium won, but it’s not all bad news).

They also give the low down on legislation in the Senate that would introduce a national captivity ban for whales and dolphins, and how that could be affected by a new government bill that would implement a partial ban. Plus, is Canada set to be home to the world’s first seaside whale and dolphin sanctuary?

The hosts also discuss Alberta’s new ban on spears in big game hunting, the U.K. Labour Party’s animal welfare plan, the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s National Justice for Animals Week, and the tragic death of Molly the pot-bellied pig, adopted from the SPCA only to be killed and eaten by her new family. You can read Camille’s op ed about Molly the pig in the Globe and Mail.
